The basic principle of MIG welding is the same as CO2/MAG welding, except that the shielding gas used in MIG welding is inert gases such as argon. Figure 1-1 shows the schematic diagram of MIG welding.

The welding wire, which is rolled into a disc shape and is basically the same as the base material, is continuously sent out through a wire feeding device. An arc is generated between the base material and the welding wire in an inert shielding gas, and the heat of the arc melts and combines the welded metal. There are many types of inert gases. MIG welding uses relatively inexpensive and readily available argon gas. In addition, according to the different welding materials, in order to improve the stability of the arc, several percentages of oxygen are mixed in the aforementioned argon gas.
